Previous Projects

Scotland and South Africa – this was funded by the National Lottery and the aim was to jointly develop teaching materials with South African teachers. One outcome of this project was the teaching pack Your Place or Mine? Another, equally important outcome was the development of relationships with educators in South Africa. Since then we have organised reciprocal visits for Scottish and South African teachers and continue to build on this area of work. The development of workshops around this pack was funded by Scottish Natural Heritage. (1998 – 2002)

Global Dimension in the Curriculum was funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) to enable us to work with teachers in Edinburgh and East Lothian to develop practical ways of incorporating global citizenship into curriculum and whole school planning. (2002-2004)

Strengthening Teacher Engagement in Development Education was a project funded by the European Commission. It was a collaborative project with European partners, mainly involving Scotdec working with a Greek education centre GAIA, based in Thessaloniki. The project encouraged creative ways of working between teachers in Greece and Scotland, and to a certain extent in South Africa, and culminated in a highly successful conference in Thessaloniki in October 2005. (2002 – 2005)

Teachers doing it for Themselves was again a DFID funded project designed to support teachers in the development and delivery of continuing professional development (2004 – 2006)

A Research project, carried out in partnership with the Faculty of Education at Edinburgh University, explored the global citizenship content (if any) of post graduate teacher training courses (PGCE) and how it had influenced classroom practice in the first few years of teaching. This work was funded by Oxfam, through their Tier 3 programme, which is intended to fund short term innovative projects from which learning can be shared across the UK,

Scotdec was also involved in the following partnership projects through the development education network in Scotland, IDEAS. (2004 – 2005)

Global Citizenship in Initial Teacher Education
This was a partnership project with Glasgow University to embed global citizenship into the theory and practice of initial teacher education. (2001 – 1004)

Sustainable Secondary Schools Parnership
This was a broad-based partnership of NGOs and other organisations, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which explored the opportunities and barriers to effective education for sustainable development in Scottish secondary schools.
