Demographic context: The school serves a working class community. Most parents are property owners, ranging from low to middle income earners The school consists of English and Afrikaans-speaking learners. The local area has some problems with drug and alcohol abuse. The school community is very conservative around issues of sexuality, contraceptives and HIV & AIDS education.
Teachers have attributed a positive change in behaviour amongst seniors to the success of the Grade 10 Life Orientation programme. External organisations have been used to promote issues of health and wellness, identity and values. The school has also employed a full-time social worker who deals with all counselling referrals and direct interventions.
